Chels: Hey, guys. Thanks for tuning in with Vape Gossip. Hope you had a great holiday. It’s a new year, and today’s episode is pretty exciting. We have a special guest, and we are going to be talking about the PAX.
Taylor: This is the PAX, made by Ploom. It was designed in San Francisco, made in China. It’s a portable, very discreet hand-held vaporizer. I’m going to review it, just show you how it works real quick, and then we’re actually going to compare it to the Firefly, which we reviewed last week.
All right, this is the PAX. The first thing you’re going to do is … the oven’s on the bottom of the PAX. You’re going to just lift up this magnetic lid by pushing one side and then lifting the other. You’ll notice that the chamber is rather larger than other portable vapes. You would just fill your herbs into the oven, put the lid right back on. The way to turn the PAX on is you just push down on the mouthpiece, which is retractable. It pops right up. That turns the vape on and it also starts the heating process. It’s turning on, heating up. It takes about 60 seconds to heat up, and then you’re ready to go.
Now, there is three settings. The way to access the settings are inside the mouthpiece. You lift the mouthpiece up. There’s a white button inside, and you click that button to change the heat. There’s three settings. There’s 370, 390 and 410, so hot, medium, low. You could click that and see I’ll go to orange, medium.
Chels: The low is what color?
Taylor: Low would be yellow and then red is high.
Chels: High, yeah.
Taylor: For more vapor, you would do the red. Another neat feature that the PAX has is if you vape it and you put it down and you forget to turn off the vaporizer, it has a stand-by mode, so it’ll automatically shut off the PAX within 20 seconds of it not being touched. Once you do pick it up again, it’ll start heating right back up. Just make sure to press down the mouthpiece to turn the vaporizer off. Another feature also does have is it’s called the party mode. You just spin the vaporizer three times, and it’ll … it just, I don’t know, just color.
Chels: Like the [inaudible 00:02:53]. That was a little review of the PAX. Now, we’re going to go into comparing the Firefly and the PAX itself. This is the Firefly. The PAX is about half the weight of the Firefly itself. It was designed by the makers of Apple here in the U.S.A. It has a little bit of a different look. The size is definitely bigger as you can tell. This one’s more of a metal look, this one’s black. They’re sticking together where my [inaudible 00:03:19] is.
Taylor: Oh my gosh. They’re into … and look, the light turns on.
Chels: That’s so funny.
Taylor: Weird. With this one, it’s lighter. It’s smaller, more discreet. I would say you could hold it in your palm and it’s almost hidden. Kind of looks like a iPod, so you don’t really know what it is.
Chels: They’re both a nice size portable vapes. I like them both. Another major difference of these two is the heating elements. The Firefly has a manual heating element, so you actually have to press this button here to have it heating up. It takes about 10 seconds, and there’s only one temperature, which is about 400 degrees. The PAX, it’s different.
Taylor: With the Firefly, you do have to hold the button down in order it to heat up, and also while you’re drawing, you keep it held down. With the PAX, all you have to do is click up the mouthpiece for it to start heating. You don’t have to hold anything down. Heats up in about 30 to 60 seconds and then you can vape. Now, the heating chambers, there’s a difference as well between the two. This one, the PAX is a little bit bigger, more surface area, more herbs, longer sessions, about 10 to 15 draws in each chamber pack.
Chels: That one’s probably going to be better if you want to smoke with friends or have it on the go. The Firefly is more for, in my opinion, a solo session. It’s a really small chamber, but you do get great vapor from it because of the convection heating, like I said before.
This one, how long do you say it lasts? About 45 minutes the battery lasts on this one, but it is interchangeable, which is the only vaporizer that you can do that with. You can buy other batteries and have them charged and bring them with you, so after this one dies, you can switch it out with another one, and you can really vape all day without having to charge it.
Taylor: I really do like that about the Firefly. With the PAX, the PAX comes with a charging dock, so you actually have to sit it into the dock for it to charge, so you can’t vape while it’s charging. With the Firefly, you can. Also, this is an internal battery, but it’s not replaceable, so you can’t just pop in a new one like the Firefly, but the PAX does last longer, longer sessions, bigger chamber, so more draws. I would say that’s solo use.
Chels: You can use it with friends. You get about five good hits off of this one, so if you only are looking for to your friends, looking for two, this is great. If you want longer sessions, I think the PAX would be better for larger groups of people or longer sessions.
Taylor: Another difference, the PAX, you need to fully pack it up in order to get the best session out of it. With the PAX, it will be heating up the whole time, so everything that you put in this chamber in that session, you need to vape it all or your material will be wasted.
Chels: This one, it’s a little better because you can heat it up when you want to heat it up, so you can save some in the chamber, which is nice. You don’t have to use it all in that one session. Like I said, better for solo uses.
Taylor: Since it does go from 0 to 400, you won’t waste material with this, so all you have to do is just keep vaping it, no problem there.
Chels: After a session with the Firefly, you’re going to want to clean it to get the loose pieces to have better flavor. You’re going to use the cleaning piece that was offered to you, that came in the box with the Firefly. You’re just going to dump out your material. You’re going to take your cleaner piece and brush out the loose material, and that’s pretty much it. They do provide alcohol wipes to clean the metal part for better flavor, but you really don’t have to do that every session. It’s totally your preference.
Taylor: The PAX does come with wipes and cleaning brushes as well in the package, but the vaporizer does require a lot more maintenance than the Firefly. It does take longer to clean, and they recommend you clean it after about four to five sessions.
Chels: They’re both somewhat easy to clean, but this one’s definitely more difficult.
Taylor: Yes, it’s just a little more difficult.
Chels: All in all, I think these are great vaporizers. They’re both the most popular ones on the market right now. Like we said before, this one’s a little more portable, better to use with more people. It has a larger chamber.
Taylor: Since that’s a convection-based vaporizer, it is a little more expensive, a little more complex. It’s about $20 more than the PAX. This goes around $249, Firefly’s about $269, both worth your money. They’re great vaporizers.
Chels: You’re going to be happy with either one you choose. It’s just which one is better for you and your lifestyle, which only you can know. Hopefully, we helped you out with making that decision.
Taylor: Like she said before, we do have a special guest today, just to switch it up a little bit.
Chels: Let’s get her opinion. She’s never tried either one of these vapes before, so it’s an honest opinion. Owner of Sol Addict, she does all UV protective active wear, so she’s pretty awesome.
Taylor: Let’s bring her in.
Chels: Today, we packed our vaporizers with lavender. It has a great aroma. It tastes great, and it’s super relaxing. I love it. It’s awesome.
Taylor: We’re going to give them to her to compare.
Guest: Thanks. Which one first?
Chels: You can do the PAX first.
Taylor: Let’s hold them both, see what you think.
Chels: Yeah, which …
Guest: Wow, this one is way heavier. This feels like nothing. This one’s like a metal block. Okay, so I press down here, and this one takes you said 60 seconds?
Taylor: About 30 to 60.
Guest: Does it matter? Does the light go when it’s ready?
Taylor: When it’s green, that’s when it’s ready.
Guest: It’s heating now.
Taylor: When it’s pink, it’s heating.
Guest: It’s getting ready. This is lavender?
Guest: That’s good. Then when I hit this one …
Chels: You just flip the switch.
Guest: Flip the switch on?
Chels: lt’s whenever you want to start vaping it, you just hit the button on the side.
Guest: This one, I just hit it and wait?
Chels: And hold it.
Taylor: Yeah, hold it down and about for 10 seconds, it’ll start.
Guest: I see it heating up in there.
Chels: [crosstalk 00:09:41].
Guest: It’s green. I’m real excited.
Taylor: Long, slow draws is what we recommend.
Chels: Best vapor quality that way. There you go, got a little something.
Taylor: Yeah, with lavender, you won’t get much vapor …
Chels: Yeah, like I said.
Taylor: … with other herbs you will.
Chels: The essential herbs.
Guest: Do you hit it more than once in one time or do you hit it and pass it?
Chels: Whatever you prefer.
Taylor: Whatever you prefer.
Chels: If you want to hang out and hold it.
Taylor: Keep hitting it. See.
Chels: She’ll probably get more vapor this time.
Taylor: We should put it up to the higher setting.
Chels: But it’s on the green also.
Taylor: That was good.
Guest: Then I hold this one down?
Chels: You just hold that one down.
Guest: And it’s better that you have this on top?
Chels: Yeah, and you can just …
Guest: The circle?
Chels: It’s really your preference, but … so that way you can see it heating up. You can actually hit it whenever you want to.
Taylor: That’s like the same amount.
Guest: I definitely taste the lavender a lot more with this one. This lavender stuff is really great.
Chels: Nice and light, huh?
Guest: I definitely really enjoy the flavor of this one.
Taylor: Look at this little piece I got online.
Chels: This is pretty cool.
Taylor: Just stick in this adapter …
Chels: Take off the mouthpiece? Yep.
Taylor: Water tool.
Taylor: It cools the vaporizer.
Chels: It cools the vaporizer.
Taylor: Oh yeah. Look at that thing.
Chels: Yeah, it’s nice. Like she says, it cools down the vapor a little bit.
Taylor: Yeah, you can’t attach anything to that one, but you can do waxes and oils.
Chels: Waxes and oils, yeah. Two differences on these two also.
Guest: I don’t even know if I can decide which one I like better.
Chels: I just was to ask you, so which one do you like better? I know, they both have so many pros and cons, it’s hard to choose.
Guest: If you’re going for more flavor and you really want to get the most out of your oils and your herbs, Firefly. If it’s more of a social aspect and you want to be the cool kid on the block with the PAX, I’d go for the PAX.
Chels: Thank you so much for tuning in with Vape Gossip again. We hope this helped you make a little more of a decision which Firefly or PAX is better for you. They’re both great in our opinion.
Guest: Thanks for having me girls.
Taylor: Of course. Thanks for coming.
Chels: Hopefully this helped you out also …
Guest: You’re welcome.
Chels: … having you and the PAX.
Taylor: You going to buy one now?
Guest: Can’t we … really both?
Taylor: Maybe both.
Chels: Maybe both. Well, we hope you guys have a great rest of the week and a great weekend, and we’ll see you next week.
Taylor: Happy New Year.
